The bridge replacement was required due to the structural integrity of an existing bridge on site. The structure has failed and had become structurally unsafe. The truss bridge spanned a main tributary of the Thames, and as well as serving the practical requirements of access for pedestrians, this bridge was a high profile feature of the course. As a result, it was important to design a replacement bridge that would be aesthetically pleasing and appropriate to the setting in which it would be installed.
Beaver Bridges designed a steel truss bridge replacement, made with timber deck and ancillary parapet. The deck was measured at 3 metres wide with a span of 32 metres. The replacement bridge was delivered on site in two sections that were spliced together. The complete assembly of the bridge was completed by being craned into position and all work was completed in a single day.
Our client’s need was urgent and Beaver Bridges had to react quickly with bridge design works to obtain approvals and then make early arrangements for permits and transport.
Due to the nature of the surroundings, thorough and robust arrangements had to be made for heavy vehicle access, and the protection of existing structures and high quality hard and soft landscaping. Over 300metres of Trackway ground protection was required, as was the careful assessment of an existing concrete bridge that was the only access to site. Beaver Bridges’ project team carried out a site survey and assessment and produced a lifting plan & method statement that addressed all elements of the project; this included environmental risks and those associated with works over water.
The end result is a truss bridge of which both Beaver Bridges and the client are very proud of.
