Footbridge Demolition

Footbridge Demolition

Blackburn, Lancashire, England

Overview

Beaver Bridges were contracted to provide our expert footbridge demolition service at a site based in Blackburn, Lancashire.

The structure has sustained significant flood damage during the storms within the UK in December 2015. As a result of the damage caused, the bridge was closed to the public.

The programme of works for the footbridge demolition involved the removal of the dilapidated suspension bridge. The bridge had been built in 1951 to replace the Dinckley ferry.

Programme

The footbridge and structural report were examined by our in-house engineers and a safe bridge demolition sequence was prescribed and submitted to our client. This step was vital to ensure that the proposed works developed by Beaver Bridges could be approved by their engineers prior to work commencing.

A bespoke fall protection system was designed by a specialist access company, 3M.  The replacement bridge was designed to be both effective and easy to use.  When installed during the construction phase, the Beaver Bridges site team were provided with on-site training in its use.  The footbridge demolition work was completed over a period of 8 days. The work was also completed ahead of schedule, reducing any further disruption to the environment or pedestrians.
