Beaver Bridges were awarded the contract to refurbish this existing footbridge over the A469 in Trecenydd, adjacent to Hendre Infants School. Beaver Bridges took on the role of Principal Contractor on the project and ensured that all necessary management controls were in place to address all environmental considerations and to meet the requirements of CDM Regulations; welfare, site security, safe access & egress, competent supervision, traffic management, temporary works, sub-contractor assessment and management.
We worked with Caerphilly Council to develop the Construction Phase Plan and the methodology for carrying out the repairs. In addition to the resurfacing work the scope included structural steel repairs, preparation to Swedish standard SA2 of existing steel work and application of a Highways Agency compliant paint system over the entire footbridge and associated steel access ramps. Our goal was to minimise disruption to the public, adjacent land users and pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The works involved temporary traffic management and a temporary pedestrian route, temporary stairs, footway surface preparation & maintenance and pelican crossing. The works site was highly visible, being on a main traffic route and so supervision and security were a main concern. This was addressed in part by using Perimeter Intruder Detection equipment with remote monitoring. A twenty-four hour call-out system was also in place for the temporary traffic and pedestrian management arrangements.
