As Principal Contractor, we were asked to provide a bridge which would enable access for delivery of large and heavy electrical equipment via a track on forestry land. Beaver Bridges prepared the Construction Phase Plan, gathering all information from the client in connection with the project. We assessed the site, the services, highlighted any access issues, any hazards, welfare, and planned the resources required and how we would work together, effectively managing risks and maintaining an organised, clean, safe and tidy site.
Beaver Bridges provided a full turnkey package, from the design phase through to integrating health, safety and welfare into the planning and management of this construction project. This involved careful planning of each element from development stage; including build, installation, maintenance, end user and the safe removal or modification of the structure. Site-specific inductions were carried out for all operatives, and we ensured that they had the up-to-date training, skills and competency to enable them to safely carry out their relevant tasks safely and efficiently, with great care and consideration given to the local environment and general site safety. Beaver Bridges carefully monitored each step, taking into account the health and safety of everyone who was working on the project, albeit a remote site and those who came into contact with the site and surrounding area including deliveries etc. We kept the site safe and secure at all times, maintained direct lines of communication with our Client and bridge designer, consulting and sharing any relevant information with them and with our site team where relevant. Health and safety was at the forefront of our daily activities.
The Structure
The new structure was a single span steel monocoque construction with load distribution through deck plates, above and below the main structural members. It was installed on concrete foundations which were constructed of pre-cast blocks built up to 4m high. The bridge itself consisted of two 9m long x 3m wide bridge decks complete with demountable handrails. Each deck was positioned to ensure wheel loads from delivery vehicles were best spread through each bridge section. The site works element were completed in 7 days.
Beaver Bridges supplied all resources including staff, machinery, equipment, tools and materials for these works. The project was completed successfully, on time and in a professional manner.
