Beaver Bridges Limited were awarded the contract by English Heritage in January 2021 to design and replace the timber footbridge at the entrance to Porchester Castle on the outskirts of Portsmouth. The current bridge was approximately 100 years old and after a structural assessment last year it was discovered that it had deteriorated quite badly and was no longer structurally stable and needed replacing. As an historic environmental location, it was important that the new bridge resembled the old one and fitted in with the surroundings.
The new bridge was constructed from Ekki Timber Grade D70 which is a very resilient and durable timber with a long lifespan and is useful in locations that are open to harsh weather conditions particularly relevant with Porchester proximity to the coast.
Beaver Bridges also installed mesh parapet infills to increase safety and make it code compliant. We also used a flitch plate to connect the posts to the main beams and this made the structure more secure. The deck on the old bridge had no anti slip inserts so these were also added to CD353 Design criteria.
The client was delighted with the completed structure and we have received many compliments and interest from both them and the public.
