Beaver Bridges spearheaded the design and construction of a cutting-edge pedestrian and cycle bridge over Glasgow’s M80 motorway, seamlessly linking Robroyston’s new developments with the existing community and the recently opened rail station. Awarded in 2020, the project exemplifies forward-thinking engineering, combining user-centric design with advanced structural solutions.
The 50m single-span Warren Truss bridge, fabricated from painted steel hollow sections in Beaver Bridges’ Wigan facility, minimises on-site disruption while maximising durability and aesthetic appeal. Its streamlined factory construction ensured precision and sustainability, reducing environmental impact. The 3.5m-wide unsegregated deck prioritises safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians, supported by 160 linear metres of compliant ramps and eight stair flights, ensuring universal access.
Innovation extended to collaborative stakeholder engagement, with dual handover processes: the superstructure and substructure to Transport Scotland, and approach works (earthworks, ramps, stairs) to Glasgow City Council. This required navigating two rigorous approval frameworks, alongside a Category 3 independent safety check, underscoring the project’s adherence to the highest engineering standards.
By integrating modular design, off-site fabrication, and inclusive infrastructure, the bridge not only connects communities but also sets a benchmark for future urban mobility projects. Beaver Bridges’ proactive approach, from initial multi-option feasibility studies to precision execution—highlights their commitment to delivering adaptable, sustainable solutions that meet evolving civic needs.
A symbol of modern connectivity, the Robroyston Bridge fosters economic growth, active travel, and seamless integration with Glasgow’s expanding transport network, positioning the city at the forefront of innovative urban development.
