Beaver Bridges were engaged by Somerset County Council with a requirement for a footbridge replacement. Within the contract, the client requested removal of the existing structure and to supply and install a new footbridge.
Nunney Footbridge, situated next to Nunney Castle in Frome, became unsafe due to rotting wooden support beams and cross planking. The bridge, which is in constant use throughout the year, serves residents and tourists alike. The scope of works for the footbridge replacement included the site set up and welfare, EA involvement, flood risk assessment, stakeholder and public liaison, with mailshots informing residents of planned works and timescales, safe removal, storage and re-instatement of street furniture. Other tasks included safe removal and disposal from the site of the old footbridge, and installation of the new structure, including traffic management.
The replacement bridge was built to the Client’s design, with cambered steel beams clad in hardwood timber with a softwood deck. The overall length of the new structure was 12.940m with a clear internal width of 1.024m. Galvanised Steel Grade to S355 with pedestrian loading 5 kN/m2 and self-weight of 5.1 tonnes was also utilised.
The works were carried out within an urban setting with due care and consideration given to the environment, the public and surrounding historic buildings. The client, Somerset County Council was pleased with the outcome and the good level of communication we maintained throughout the project with them and with the public, and with the methods implemented to carry out the works in what was an awkward site.
