Beaver Bridges has delivered a transformative 50m Warren Truss Steel Active Travel Bridge in Oswestry, Shropshire, setting a benchmark in innovative infrastructure for Shropshire Council. This DDA-compliant structure, part of the Oswestry Sustainable Urban Extension (SUE), seamlessly connects the Innovation Park, housing developments, and Public Rights of Way across the A5, fostering sustainable community growth.
Innovation at Its Core:
Advanced Warren Truss Design: Engineered for strength and efficiency, the lightweight yet robust hollow-section steel beams ensure durability, ideal for high-traffic active travel.
Eco-Conscious Longevity: Coated in Highways Specification Type II (Alt) corrosion-resistant paint, the bridge minimizes maintenance while withstanding harsh environmental conditions.
Precision In-House Fabrication: Fabricated in Beaver Bridges’ Wigan facility, the 68-tonne structure was transported using proprietary logistics, ensuring quality control and timeline adherence
Logistical Mastery:
The bridge was installed in a single overnight operation (27 November 2023) using a 1,000-tonne crane, landing on custom concrete foundations. Remarkably, the A5 reopened by 6 a.m.—avoiding rush-hour disruption—showcasing unparalleled efficiency.
Community & Collaboration:
As a full turnkey project, Beaver Bridges managed everything from design to landscaping, collaborating closely with Shropshire Council and WSP. The bridge’s 3.5m-wide deck and 105m ramps prioritize accessibility, aligning with the council’s vision for inclusive, future-ready infrastructure.
Mark Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for growth, hailed the project as a “major step forward,” underscoring its role in regional development.
Set for Spring 2024 completion with ramps and landscaping, this bridge epitomizes Beaver Bridges’ expertise in marrying technical precision with community-centric innovation—ushering Oswestry into a connected, sustainable future.
