Overview

Elevating Connectivity: Cutting-Edge Pedestrian Link for University of Brighton

Beaver Bridges has delivered a visionary 33.5m steel pedestrian bridge over Lewes Road, seamlessly uniting the University of Brighton’s East and West Campuses near Moulescoomb Station. This high-profile project, completed in January 2022, marries innovative engineering with urban sensitivity, serving 21,000 students and 2,600 staff while enhancing access for Brighton’s vibrant community.

Fabricated off-site in Beaver Bridges’ Wigan facility, the bridge exemplifies modular precision. Its steel structure—pre-assembled into six panels and two beams—ensured quality control and rapid deployment. Transported in-house to Brighton, installation was executed over two consecutive night shifts under full road closure, minimising disruption to the busy thoroughfare and adjacent residential areas.

Innovation shines through multi-functional design: a 15.5m staircase ramp on the West side ensures smooth pedestrian flow, while an integrated lift shaft and car on the East side guarantee universal accessibility. The bridge’s sleek cladding and architectural steel fins blend aesthetics with durability, creating a landmark gateway to the university and city.

Advanced infrastructure integration included piling foundations, drainage, LED lighting, and CCTV, enhancing safety and sustainability. Despite the complex urban setting, Beaver Bridges’ meticulous planning allowed the university to remain fully operational—a testament to collaborative stakeholder management.

Part of Brighton’s broader regeneration, the bridge stands as a symbol of progressive urban design. By harmonising form, function, and community needs, Beaver Bridges has crafted not just a crossing, but a catalyst for connectivity—empowering education, enriching the cityscape, and setting a benchmark for future-ready infrastructure.
