Beaver Bridges has transformed Lossiemouth’s iconic East Beach access with a groundbreaking 75m steel footbridge, replacing a century-old structure while balancing heritage, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. Awarded the CECA Scotland 2022 Prize and celebrated for exceptional community involvement, this project exemplifies sustainable engineering in one of the UK’s most ecologically sensitive and Instagram-famous coastal estuaries.
Technical Innovation:
Marine-Grade Durability: A fluoropolymer paint coating ensures 60+ years of corrosion resistance in harsh saltwater environments, paired with a lightweight FRP (fibre-reinforced polymer) deck for slip resistance and low maintenance.
Eco-Conscious Design: Collaboration with Marine Scotland, SEPA, and Historic Environment Scotland ensured compliance with strict marine and dune ecosystem protections, preserving local flora and fauna.
Logistical Mastery:
Prefabricated in four sections at Beaver Bridges’ facility, the bridge was transported in-house and installed under a strategic road closure. Stainless steel tap rails and protective plywood decking underscored precision, while piling and upgraded pathways guaranteed DDA-compliant access for wheelchairs and buggies.
Community Legacy:
Beyond infrastructure, Beaver Bridges enriched Lossiemouth through a defibrillator donation, a 3D-printed bridge model, and a school-named safety boat. Local schools engaged in bridge-themed projects and joined the opening ceremony, fostering STEM enthusiasm.
Cabinet Secretary Mairi Gougeon MSP praised the bridge for restoring access to this “beautiful and scenic spot,” now safer and more resilient. The project’s dual triumph—technical excellence and grassroots collaboration—sets a benchmark for coastal infrastructure, proving that innovation and community can coexist harmoniously.
Celebrated by residents, tourists, and environmental bodies alike, the Lossiemouth Bridge stands as a testament to engineering that honours the past, protects the present, and inspires future generations.
