Beaver Bridges Awarded Oxpens Bridge Contract: Building a New Icon for Oxford’s Cityscape Oxford City Council is embarking on a transformative project to enhance walking and cycling infrastructure across the city with the development of the Oxpens River Bridge, and we are thrilled to announce that Beaver Bridges has been officially appointed to deliver the structural steelwork for this landmark! This isn’t just another infrastructure project; it is a defining piece of architecture for one of the world’s most famous cities. Joining a powerhouse cohort of designers, architects, and Oxford City Council, we are providing the technical framework to support and realise the design vision that will soon become an inseparable part of the iconic Oxford skyline. As the UK’s leading bridge construction company, we’re excited to bring our professionalism and decade of experience to see where we can take this project. Architecture in Motion The Oxpens River Bridge is set to be a masterpiece of modern engineering. As bridge specialists, we understand that in a city defined by its dreaming spires, any new addition must have its own intrinsic visual merit. A key feature of the scheme is its sensitive and visually lightweight design, carefully integrated into the surrounding landscape. Two sculptural “wave” forms frame key views and introduce a sense of rhythm to the crossing, enhancing both user experience and the wider setting. It is set to be as beautiful as it is functional – minimising visual impact while enhancing the city’s existing cityscape. Our role is to translate these ambitious visions created by Knight Architects into a reality. Drawing on our legacy of expertise, we can ensure that every curve and connection meets the standards required for such a prestigious location. While, by definition, it will be a path, in actuality, it will be a destination and architectural landmark. A Sustainable Regeneration Project As a cornerstone of Oxford’s West End regeneration programme, the proposed 100-metre bridge will form a vital active travel link, connecting Osney Mead to the new redevelopment site in Oxpens via a central 37.5-metre span. This major infrastructure project has been designed to support both residents and commuters, acting as a sustainability initiative, offering safer, more efficient routes for walking and cycling and reducing city-centre congestion. For a city as lively as Oxford, this will be a game-changer. By slashing transit times and encouraging active travel, the project aims to clear the air and reduce city-centre congestion, proving that world-class architecture and environmental sustainability go hand-in-hand. Having been in the pipeline for over a decade, the project is finally taking off. Final government permission to build across the Thames was granted in June 2025, with construction planned for early this year. We’re really looking forward to getting stuck in and delivering the future of sustainable city work. Why it Works for Beaver Bridges At Beaver Bridges, we work across a variety of sectors offering a range of services, from permanent or temporary construction to emergency refurbishment solutions. Our mission always remains the same, whatever project we are working on: To design and deliver safe, sustainable, and accessible bridge solutions – combining technical excellence with practical problem solving. For the Oxpens project, our mission shines through in delivery. Delivering the steel structure for this bridge allows us to leave a permanent, sustainable footprint in a city that values heritage and innovation in equal measure. When asked about his team’s involvement in the Oxpens Bridge project, Henry Beaver shared his excitement, “We’ve been looking forward to this one for a while. Being awarded the Oxpens contract is a huge milestone for us, mostly because we know how much of a difference this bridge is going to make for people in Oxford. It’s a massive project, but at the end of the day, our goal is simple: to build a solid, sustainable crossing that looks great and works for everyone.” “We’re proud to be part of the city’s growth, and I’m personally excited to see our team get to work on such a transformative piece of Oxford’s cityscape.” A Project We’re Proud of Planning approval was granted in April 2024 after meaningful pre-application engagement and clear design communication, with construction anticipated to be completed for the bridge to open in early 2027. We feel immensely privileged to play a part in this transformation and cannot wait to get started. The Oxpens River Bridge will stand as a testament to what happens when architectural beauty meets engineering precision, leaving a legacy of green travel for generations of Oxford residents and visitors alike.
