Beaver Bridges were contracted to provide a footbridge replacement. Within this contract, Beaver Bridges were asked to supply and install a 14-metre span steel structure footbridge at the Willingdon Tree location on the Brighton to the main-line route.
Research that Beaver Bridges we received from Network Rail showed that particular footbridge was Britain’s busiest footpath railway crossing, with more than 760 trains passing through each day, running at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. As a result of the high traffic that the location saw on a daily basis, this crossing was an unacceptable risk to local residents and so desperately required a footbridge replacement.
A group of children and parents from Salfords School were the first to use the new bridge on the Monday along with Simon Morgan, Network Rail’s safety Director for the South East, who said “One of the little girls who used to use the foot crossing said how scary it was, so this is a huge improvement in safety for her and for everyone in the community.”
Salfords School Co-Headteacher Carrie Christer said: “Our school is so close to the railway and many of our children cross the line with their families, so it is great that with this new footbridge they can now cross safely.”
